How often does BD-BrandProtect to scan the entire Internet?
Our service is configurable, so we can scan the Internet as frequently as we feel necessary, so the time may vary from every 24 hours for high traffic sites to every 60 days for the more obscure websites and even longer for sites that are not relevant. In total we visit about a billion pages per month.
Can BD-BrandProtect’s data be used for legal proceedings?
Evidence of infractions is burned to CD shortly after the infraction has been recorded in our systems. Our systems do not allow infraction content data to be changed after it has been collected by the automated system; we merely classify collected data as relevant or not. Therefore, data integrity is assured from occurrence, to recording, to delivery, and content comparison can be compared between the data on the delivered CD (or other read only media) and the collected data in our database.
How do you deal with Regulated or Business
Proprietary Data?
We do not store any regulated or business proprietary data on our systems.
What’s your process for contacting authorities and
who are these?
At BD-BrandProtect we work closely with our clients to develop procedures and policies that coincide with our clients’ organizational needs.
BD-BrandProtect leverages relationships with authorities at various levels and jurisdictions to protect the interests of its clients and their customers. However, in doing so, we always ensure that we follow the client’s protocol, as agreed to in our upfront planning and setup discussions and as reviewed on a continuous basis during the term of our agreement.
We customize templates, processes and policies to ensure the client is getting the service that best suits their requirements. Our experience working with large financial institutions helps us guide each client through a best practices exercise that includes dealing with police authorities and ensuring compliance with the corporate policies of our customers, as well as the governing laws of jurisdictions in which issues may arise.
If BD-BrandProtect identifies a child pornography website, it is our policy to notify the proper authorities. The timing and procedures of this policy can be negotiated with each customer. In the past, such authorities have included:
- The Center for Missing and Exploited Children
(who work with the FBI)
- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)
- Local and state police
- International authorities, as required
When a client experiences a phishing attack, BD-BrandProtect acts on their behalf and contacts all relevant parties to have the site removed as soon as possible.
During this process, the BD-BrandProtect Incident Response Team may contact a Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) in a specific country. CERTs are country-specific organizations whose purpose is to facilitate communication between global law enforcement/Internet security teams and resident Internet companies such as ISPs, Registrars and Domain Owners.
CERTs also provide the online community with security bulletins, advising them of recently discovered software and hardware vulnerabilities, and provide trending of viruses and identity theft attacks.
CERTs are extremely useful to BD-BrandProtect when principal efforts to remove fraudulent or illegal content have been fruitless. In the anti-phishing process, BD-BrandProtect contacts a CERT after all principal attempts at removing the content have failed.
Due to BD-BrandProtect’s long-standing reputation of being consistently accurate in our reporting, we have developed relationships with various CERTs around the globe who have enabled direct lines of communication with CERT members, which means we see a faster response than through typical channels.
Communication with CERTs is vital to the takedown process and we would highly recommend allowing BD-BrandProtect to continue notifying these organizations to assist in the takedown process.
